Fronted by John Murphy, the elusive yet whimsical lyricist, Magic Magic received quiet critical claim - albeit nonexistent publicity - for their self-titled, debut release. “Washington or Bust” is a triumph for the band’s lush orchestrations, though Murphy comes off sounding like a tired Ben Gibbard. While Murphy wallows into the background, the instrumentals showcase Magic Magic’s many influences, from folk to classical. The band approaches genius on their kookier tracks, addressing jellyfish and sleepy lions. If you find yourself in the Northeast, Magic Magic’s delightful melodies are sure to charm.
