track review: Male Welcome All (To Buy Their Upcoming Album)

Male

The Chicago-based improvisational group Male sounds ambient, noisy, minimalist and somewhat like well-orchestrated clatter. The album title, All Are Welcome, epitomizes their mindset on music. With musicians of all styles taking part on their album, they seem to welcome new ideas. They stick to the broad realms of improvisation, experimental and avant-jazz. “Wrangler for Hire” seems to constantly be in a state of pseudo-development and fading away. It’s background noise that keeps your attention, so in a sense it’s not background at all. With the use of reverb, repitition, drones and seemingly scattered sound, the song is minimalistic and complex. I even had the song on repeat and didn’t realize it until the third time around. There are two reasons for this: the song was toggling between the background and foreground of my attention and I was focusing on different parts of the song each time. In two words the song could be defined as hypnotic noise.
