video: Electronica Meets Tin Pan Alley with The Real Tuesday Weld

I wish the real Tuesday was actually a Friday that felt like Sunday when I woke up. But, my guess is that’s now what these Brits thought of when naing themselves. UK’s The Real Tuesday Weld mixes modern electronics with old-timey lounge music to create what frontman Stephen Coates calls “antique beat”. It has syncopated beats and a ragtime rhythm, but the digital era we live in allows the Real Tuesday Weld to revive this once-popular style. Oddly enough, Tin Pan Alley saw its demise near the time of the Great Depression and now it’s making an appearance when times might be looking a glum once again. The band’s song “Last Words” even appeared in the new movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist which in and of itself was glum minus its soundtrack. The song “Kix” has a new animated video which looks like old-style cartoons mixed with Gorillaz’s animation. The song itself is littered with electonic beats, ragtime piana and some horns and violin thrown in for good measure. An interesting mix that comes off as perfectly natural. More so than that forced chuckle a half hour into Nick and Norah.
