video: Lykke in the Limelight
If you’re looking for the dreamy sleaze of 1980s glamor, then Lykke Li’s new video for ‘Breaking It Up’ should be riding high on your list of things to experience. Enlisting the aid of director Sarah Chatman (whose worked with the likes of Lily Allen, Noisettes and Yves Saint Laurent), Li explores the finer points of lounging amidst beautiful half naked bodies, shuffling and dancing when the mood strikes her, and of course the art of “sliding her arms dramatically over her face”. It’s misty, it’s decadent, and it’s randy.

That doesn’t mean that the Swedish indie pop songstress is all about blatant chic fluff. Li’s music has a playful minimal quality which belies her gaudy exterior. This is evident on her forth coming album Young Novels. Set to be released on August 19th in America, the album is Li’s first full-length release - an affair of pulse percussion, and snippets of rhythm and melody. Add to that Li’s understated vocal work and you’re in for an intriguing little piece of pop candy.
As it is generally the thing to do, Lykke Li will be touring in support of this new release. Check her out when she clicks and clacks her way to your neck of the woods. Could anything brighten your day more then a Swedish nymph swinging her hips, singing the words “dance, dance, dance”? No, didn’t think so. Go on, then, get to her show.
