news: Eric Avery Succumbs

Eric Avery

Eric Avery has agreed to join former band mates Jane’s Addiction for a one-night-only performance at the first-ever U.S. NME Awards, where they will also be crowned with the Godlike Genius Award. We can’t make that shit up. The band in is good company, joining The Clash, New Order, Primal Scream, and Manic Street Preachers as recipients of the UK version of the award.

Avery had continually declined offers to reunite with the band, citing his solo career as the reason. He was busy, mind you, having just released his debut solo LP, Help Wanted. He said, “I’ve chosen to reject the prospects of reuniting in the past, for personal and philosophical reasons. I have always considered reunions to be a way to make a quick buck, and it sells short my own experience of it the first time around.” But, he adds, “The reason that I started to even consider this is because it’s honoring the past instead of trying to recreate it.”

He has a point, sure. But, don’t underestimate how damn hard it must be to turn down Perry Farrell so many times. Judging by the Lollapalooza lineup, not many turn him down twice.
