audio: Grand Archives Set Debut

The Grand Archives are set to release their eponymous debut on February 19th on Sub Pop Records. Headed by Seattle native Mat Brooke, The Grand Archives’ music is drenched in influences from Brooke’s former group: Band of Horses. Yet, where Band of Horses excels in sweeping somber instrumentals and bone-chilling melodies, The Grand Archives enjoy the sunnier side of the sonic horizon. Take ‘Torn Blue Foam Couch,’ linked below, for example. The same folksy echoes and eerie resonating vocals n dwell here, but as The Grand Archives swing along into their melody, the chords take an upbeat turn. By the end, ‘Torn Blue Foam Couch’ is more a sunny pop song than anything found on Cease to Begin. Forming in late 2006, the quintet agonized over the recording of their debut LP, recording the album in three different studios with producer Ben Kersten. The drawn out recording process was in part due to the diverse selection of instrumentation needed for The Grand Archives, including Flugelhorns and trombones. The sum is a warm slice of refined pop melodies, taking after Band of Horses just enough to attract old fans, but not enough to strip The Grand Archives of their sunny individuality.
