Die! Die! Die!

Snarling trio Die! Die! Die! have been on tour(ish) for the past three years, either in a mad effort to either get famous, or in a touchingly patriotic attempt to remind us all that Australia is not the only country down under. The boys from New Zealand are releasing their second CD, Promises Promises, on February 12, 2008. Don’t be fooled by the band’s name - the group avoids stereotyping itself by staying far away from the bubblegum pop and cheezy long songs implied by their moniker, and instead tends toward abrasive vocals and brittle drumbeats. From a band called “Die! Die! DIIIIE!”, who would have guessed? It’s great to see that kids these days are getting creative with the whole band name/band sound dichotomy.

No, but seriously - kudos to the boys on the ethereal “ooo’s” found on the album’s lead track, ‘Sideways, Here We Come.’ The almost-bodiless humming that backs up vocalist Andrew Wilson singing things like “There’s no difference between a knife in your hand and a gun in your back” turn the song into something - dare I say? - almost beautiful, in a satisfyingly punk-appropriate way. There’s a fine, much-appreciated line between cacaphony and artistic dissonance, and (at least on this track), the New Zealanders walk it.

Get excited for Promises Promises in February, but only if Die! Die! Die! can avoid being too predictably apocalyptic. New Zealand will probably be the last country in the world to be destroyed in the event of a third world war, anyway, so the trio really doesn’t have anything to complain about.
