aLive: Lollapalooza | Grant Park
There’s exhausting and then there’s death warmed. Another Lollapalooza has graced its annual musical blessing on Chicago for three days in (usually) relaxing downtown Grant Park. For the obsessed its a test of physical and mental endurance balancing over a hundred acts in less than 3 days spanning three quarters of a mile with music ranging from pop, rock, to hip hop.
Perry Ferrell’s once fledgling summer festival has seen a recent rejuvenation thanks in large part to the indie music scene surge. This year may have marked a milestone for the variety of acts focusing heavily on newcomers and blog favorites. Sure, there were headliners like Pearl Jam, and Ben Harper yet there was a youthful movement gaining steam. In fact, many of the big names like Tokyo Police Club, LCD Soundsystem, Los Campesinos!, and more seemed to be on their ‘A’ game all weekend long giving fans what they had hoped to witness; a show.
Of course, what you don’t see is all the stuff that happens behind the scenes - like interviews, artists hanging out with the commoners, and the oft overlooked visuals of the event. So, we thought it best to serve you a cold dish of casual musicians on a weekend that seemed to mimic such. From Stephen Marley shooting it with his son in tow to Peter Bjorn and John sporting their own merchandise without shame, the artists treated us like neighbors for a day.
